Namaste, I am Meena Yammanur.

I am a teacher turned Children coach. In 2008, my son was admitted to LKG in one of the schools he had always wanted to explore and learn. However, the school insisted on making the children sit in one place without movement and mainly do writing. I could not even make out that he had this kind of challenge, as he had not communicated it to me. But in his notebook, it was always reflected as R and R, which meant rub and rewrite. When I asked him what it was, he simply replied Rub and Rewrite. The child was asked to write two-digit numbers within a half-centimetre of a square box, in 160 boxes in a page, which was very difficult for a child who had not yet developed fine motor skills. This continued for the entire year, and my son lost interest in schooling itself. It was a traumatic situation for him, and he never wanted to write or read. He could not express the challenge he was facing, as he did not know how to orally communicate this.

This continued, and it reflected in the comments he received from his school and even from relatives and friends. This had a greater impact on him, and he found it difficult to cope in his schooling. As a parent, I had nightmares and lots of worries about this situation. However, I had to make myself strong and put in effort to develop his reading and writing skills. He was not doing it with passion but with force, as he had a challenge to develop an interest based on the kind of impression he already had.

As a teacher, I never wanted any child to suffer in this manner. This is why I started developing reading and writing habits for my students in school. I saw remarkable improvement in my students. I believe that it is necessary to give children a platform to voice out what they are feeling within them through writing activities. This not only helps them to voice out, but it also gives them lots of confidence and clarity in what they want to express and write. This helps in developing their linguistic skills very strongly at an early age, and I believe it is never too late to start.

So I am on a mission to help 100,000 children find their voice through writing and make a difference in the world.

Shanthanu BR has picked up the skill of story writing. If given words or pictures, Shanthanu can write a story. He has also improved his language skills by translating two stories from the Kannada book "Karunalu Baa Belake" into English.

Shanthanu has become more curious as a result of his learning, which was facilitated by Mindmaps. This has pushed him to ask more questions, read more, and deepen his learning. It has also helped him improve his vocabulary for writing and speaking and his language skills for storytelling.
